The World's Oldest Illustrated Bible Isn't Where You'd Expect

Picture the oldest illustrated Christian book in the world. Most people, asked to guess where it lives, would say the Vatican Library, or a museum vault in Constantinople, or some climate-controlled archive in Western Europe. Almost no one guesses correctly. It sits in a stone monastery on a hillside in northern Ethiopia, a few kilometers from the town of Adwa, where it has stayed for roughly 1,500 years.

The Legend

The manuscripts are called the Garima Gospels, two illuminated Gospel books housed at Abba Garima Monastery, named for the saint who tradition says produced them. According to the monastery’s own account, Abba Garima, one of the Nine Saints who brought Christianity’s scriptures into the Ge’ez language, wrote and illustrated the complete Gospels in a single day, with God supposedly holding back the sunset until he finished. That detail belongs to legend rather than history, the kind of story that grows up naturally around a revered founder over centuries of retelling.

What the Radiocarbon Dating Actually Showed

What is not legend is the radiocarbon dating. When conservators finally tested the parchment in the 2010s, the results placed the manuscripts as early as the 4th to 6th centuries AD, centuries earlier than the illustrated Gospel books previously considered the oldest in existence. The dates line up almost exactly with the era of the Nine Saints and the earliest years of Ethiopian Christianity itself, meaning this is not a later copy of an old tradition. It may be close to the tradition’s actual starting point.

Survival Against the Odds

Picture what that means practically. While most of the ancient Christian world’s earliest illustrated manuscripts were destroyed by war, fire, foreign conquest, or simple decay over the centuries, a set of Gospel books in a mountain monastery in the Ethiopian highlands survived intact, page by page, through all of it. The Garima Gospels only contain the four Gospels, not the full Ethiopian canon.
